The InnerWorkings Story: Why We’re Changing the Way We Work (and Lead)

InnerWorkings Dani & Peta Founders- Who we are

Ever felt like you’re finally catching your breath on a Sunday evening, only to have it snatched away the moment your alarm goes off on Monday morning?

(Hello, Sunday Scaries. We’ve all been there.)

For years, we watched this cycle play out from the front lines of clinical health.

Daniella was in critical and cardiac care as a Registered Nurse, seeing the literal "heartbreak" of high-pressure environments. Peta was in her clinic as a Naturopath and Nutritionist, helping people piece their health back together after burnout had shattered it.

We noticed a frustrating, recurring pattern:
People would work hard to recover. They’d fix their sleep, adjust their diet, and find their zen.
Then, they’d go back into the same stressful workplace.

And within months? They were right back in our clinics.
The "fix" wasn’t sticking because the environment hadn’t changed.

We realised that you can't heal in the same environment that made you sick.

That’s why InnerWorkings exists. We didn't want to just treat the symptoms of a broken work culture; we wanted to redesign the culture itself using science-backed, clinical evidence.

The Shift from "Self-Care" to "System-Care"

For too long, workplace wellness has been a box-ticking exercise. A bowl of fruit in the breakroom here, a discounted gym membership there.

(Because a banana is definitely going to solve chronic understaffing, right?)

The reality is that individual resilience has its limits. When the system is overloaded, even the most resilient person will eventually hit a wall.

At InnerWorkings, we look at the workplace through a clinical lens. We translate complex neuroscience and physiology into simple, actionable habits that actually move the needle on productivity and focus.

Our Framework: The Three Pillars of InnerWorkings

We believe that a high-performing team is built on three essential pillars: Empathy, Energy, and Environment.

1. Empathy (The Nervous System of Leadership)

Empathy isn't just a "soft skill." In our world, it’s a biological state.

This pillar explores the nervous system of leadership in a broader sense: how leaders regulate themselves, read the room, and create the conditions for trust.

When a leader has stronger emotional regulation, communication becomes clearer, reactions become less reactive, and psychological safety becomes easier to build.

→ Better Self-Regulation = Better Leadership Presence = Safer, More Connected Teams.

We cover themes like nervous system awareness, polyvagal-informed leadership, and the way stress states shape behaviour, decision-making, and culture.

When leadership understands these dynamics, they don't just "manage" people; they motivate them.

2. Energy (The Metabolic Engine)

Burnout isn't just "being tired." It’s a metabolic and recovery issue.

We focus on themes like the gut-brain connection and metabolic health to better understand how energy, stress, and recovery show up at work.

If your team is crashing at 3 PM, it’s not always a lack of willpower: it may be a mismatch between demand, fuel, recovery, and nervous system load.

We explore practical ways teams can better support stable energy throughout the day.

  • Understanding the glucose roller-coaster.

  • Optimising sleep cycles for cognitive recovery.

  • Using breathwork to shift from "fight or flight" to "focus and flow."

3. Environment (The Physical and Cultural Space)

Your surroundings dictate your nervous system’s default setting.

We help organisations optimise both the physical environment and workplace setup, alongside the cultural environment (communication channels and focus blocks), to better support the nervous system.

If your office layout or your Slack notification settings are constantly triggering a "threat response," your team's prefrontal cortex: the part of the brain responsible for logic and problem-solving, can start to go offline.

(Hard to innovate when your brain thinks it’s being chased by a tiger, isn't it?)

Why This Matters Now: The Legal Landscape

This isn't just about "feeling good" anymore. It’s a legal requirement.

The NSW Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 and the NSW Code of Practice for Managing Psychosocial Hazards have changed the game for Australian businesses.

Under the new regulations, PCBUs (Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking) are now legally mandated to apply the Hierarchy of Controls to psychosocial risks.

What does that mean for you?
It means that administrative controls: like having a policy or offering an EAP: are no longer enough. You are required to look at "higher-order" controls:

  • Elimination: Can we remove the hazard (e.g., unrealistic workloads) entirely?

  • Work Design: Can we restructure the role to give the worker more control?

  • Environment: Can we change the physical or social setup to reduce stress?

InnerWorkings helps you navigate these complexities. We aren't just "wellness coaches"; we are clinical professionals who align your health programs with SafeWork NSW guidelines.

Bridging the Gap

We know that science can be intimidating. "Vagal toning" and "metabolic flexibility" aren't exactly everyday office lingo.

Our job is to bridge that gap. We take the heavy clinical research and turn it into conversational, easy-to-digest strategies that your team can use immediately.

A key part of that methodology is using core biological markers and clinical tools, like Heart Rate Variability (HRV), to help us understand patterns of stress, recovery, and nervous system load across our programs.

No fluff. No pseudoscience. Just evidence-based practices that help your people feel better so they can work better.

→ Science-backed insights.
→ Simple actions.
→ Sustainable results.

Moving Beyond the "Quick Fix"

We’ve seen what happens when businesses invest in their people's health. We’ve seen focus return, absenteeism drop, and cultures transform from reactive to proactive.

But it starts with a conversation.

Are you ready to move beyond the fruit bowl and start building a workplace that actually works?

InnerWorkings

We offer everything from 90-minute masterclasses (perfect for a high-impact lunch and learn) to full-day immersions for leadership teams wanting to explore themes like nervous system regulation, energy, and workplace design.

We’d love to chat about your specific challenges and how we can help you meet your WHS obligations while boosting your team's performance.

Reach out to us here or explore our programs to see how we can support your team.

Let’s change the way we work: from the inside out.
